Who You're Actually Defending Against at SL2

Security Level 2 means your system must withstand an attack from someone with moderate resources, generic skills, and low motivation — but with some knowledge of your specific system.

That's not a description of a state actor. It's a description of a contractor who's worked on your plant before.

The Four Security Levels, Briefly

IEC 62443 defines four Security Levels, each describing the sophistication of attacker a system is expected to withstand — from opportunistic, low-skill actors at SL1 up to attackers with extensive resources and specialised, system-specific knowledge at SL4. Most industrial component and system requirements in practice are written and tested against SL2 and SL3.

What SL2 Requires at the Component Level

Under IEC 62443-4-2, SL2 isn't satisfied by a datasheet claim — it requires the underlying component capability to actually be configured and verified: authentication that can't be bypassed by someone with insider knowledge of the system, access control enforced consistently across the component, and the ability to detect and log the kind of tampering a knowledgeable insider — not just an opportunistic outsider — could attempt.

Zones and Conduits in an Indian Manufacturing Context

The zone-and-conduit model is a starting framework, not the finished job. In an Indian manufacturing plant, that means actually mapping which systems sit in which zone, what's allowed to cross each conduit, and — critically — verifying that the physical network matches that mapping, not just the diagram used in the original HAZOP documentation.

The Most Common Misunderstanding

The standard is not a checklist. Meeting SL2 on paper and meeting SL2 in practice are two different outcomes, and the gap between them is exactly where a contractor with prior knowledge of your plant would look first.
